Functional Genomics

We are interested in the functional regions of the genome. These include protein-coding genes as well as some non-coding regions. Our group is involved in the development of algorithms and tools to identify these functional regions. We have developed and refined a program, GeneScan, for predicting protein-coding genes. We are working towards programs for recognizing miRNAs, regulatory regions and functional repeat sequences using a combination of comparative genomics approach and phylogenetic analysis. We have also developed tools for prioritizing SNPs that could be used as diagnostic markers for mitochondrial diseases. We hope to extend this approach to nuclear genes as well.
